This summer, our preschool teachers attended the All About Balance STEM training. They learned creative ways to teach students about balance—not only using objects, but also through activities with their own bodies. These engaging strategies will help our youngest learners build problem-solving skills, curiosity, and a strong foundation in STEM.
Over the past several months, the district has been exploring ways to enhance our school facilities, while prioritizing the essential needs from the previous plan. The revised scope focuses on essential safety and learning upgrades, balancing cost with impact. This updated plan reflects the priorities we heard from you, our community, to focus on safety, accessibility and future-ready learning.

This fall sees the completion of projects at the school including the new roof, football/track facility and baseball/softball building. All of this is being funded from our future LOST funds (Sales Tax). No property taxes were used in this construction.
The roof to the "east" gym and all the classrooms that were not on the original building were replaced. (2001 addition)
A new drainage ditch and tile has been installed that starts at the north of the building and travels to the ditch at the highway.
The "original" bleachers were moved to the visitor side many years ago. These bleachers were out of code and risked liability to the district. They have been replaced with a new set of visitor bleachers that includes handicap access.
A new structure was be built around the current football/track building. This will include new restrooms, concession stand and improved press box on the second level.
Softball/Baseball now has a new building that house a ticket booth, restrooms and concession stand.
What is a local school wellness policy?
A local school wellness policy is a written document that guides a local educational agency’s (LEA) or school district’s efforts to establish a school environment that promotes students’ health, well-being, and ability to learn.
The wellness policy requirement was established by the Child Nutrition and Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Reauthorization Act of 2004 and further strengthened by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (HHFKA). It requires each LEA participating in the National School Lunch Program and/or School Breakfast Program to develop a wellness policy.
The final rule expands the requirements to strengthen policies and increase transparency. The responsibility for developing, implementing, and evaluating a wellness policy is placed at the local level, so the unique needs of each school under the LEA’s jurisdiction can be addressed.

Virtual reality is no longer a future fantasy—it's here! Thanks to a generous purchase by the Education Foundation, the Westwood School District has received a pack of eight VR headsets and accessories, instantly transforming learning across grade levels.
Students aren't just reading about the world; they're exploring it!
Fifth Graders plunged into the ocean depths, coming face-to-face with sharks and an octopus on a virtual tour of coral reefs.
High School Biology students journeyed through different ecosystems, visiting freshwater, seawater, and mountain biomes.
Sixth Graders toured both the microscopic and the ancient world! One class stepped inside the human body to see plant and animal cells in action, while Mrs. Eggerling’s class was transported to Greek ruins at stunning historical sites.
The excitement is contagious! Next week, Mrs. Walter's first graders will use the tech to explore the skeleton, heart, and circulatory system.
The message from the students to the Education Foundation is loud and clear: "We love this extension to our learning!"
